  1. This country was inhabited by Guaymi Indians until the Spaniards took over
  2. in 1502.  Independence from Spain came in 1821.  There was a civil war in
  3. 1948-49 but since then very little violent conflict has occurred.  Free political
  4. institutions have also continued to exist.  Costa Rica has a high standard of
  5. living with widespread land ownership and a large middle-class population.
